Braida is the Rocchetta Tanaro winery founded by Giacomo Bologna, the man who in the 1980s transformed Barbera from a farmer's wine into a great red. Ai Suma, Piedmontese for "we're there", is what Bologna exclaimed on tasting the first vintage, the 1989.
It is made from late-harvested Barbera on the estate's hills at Rocchetta Tanaro, and only in the best vintages. After about twenty days of skin maceration, the wine matures for fifteen months in oak and a year in bottle.
2015, a warm, generous vintage, produced a concentrated, velvety Ai Suma: overripe black fruit, plum, sweet spice, cocoa and lively freshness that keeps the richness in balance. With braised meats, game, red meat roasts and aged cheeses.
