Giovanni Canonica is an artisan grower in Barolo, reserved and uninterested in the limelight, with tiny production and a cult following, above all in Japan. Alongside the historic Paiagallo vineyard, in 2010 he bought a small plot in the commune of Grinzane Cavour, which gives this Barolo, first made in 2012.
The vines are over fifty years old and include the rare Nebbiolo Rosé biotype, which brings floral aromas and a finer texture. In the cellar the method is unchanged: foot treading, native yeasts, long macerations, ageing in large casks, no fining or filtration.
2016 is one of the great classic Barolo vintages, with a long, cool season that produced wines of finesse and tension. Here you find red fruit, rose, spice, forest floor and leather over dense tannins and serious structure; it will reward further cellaring. A niche Barolo, honest and full of personality. With braised meat, tajarin with truffle and aged cheeses.
