Agripunica was founded in 2002 in the Sulcis, in south-west Sardinia, from a top-level alliance: Cantina di Santadi, Tenuta San Guido (the makers of Sassicaia) and the winemaker Giacomo Tachis, father of modern great Tuscan reds. The aim was to create a great red based on Carignano, the signature grape of this land.
Barrua is the estate's flagship and takes its name from the area between Narcao and Barrua where the vineyards lie. Carignano is joined by a small share of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot; the wine ages for about 18 months in new French oak barriques.
The 2020 shows ripe dark fruit, myrtle and Mediterranean scrub, with well-integrated spice and toast and a soft, enveloping structure. A Mediterranean red with an international touch, perfect with roasts, lamb, suckling pig and aged cheeses such as Sardinian pecorino.
