Camigliano is one of Montalcino's historic hamlets, set on the south-western slope of the hill, and gives its name to the estate that surrounds it. Since 1957 it has belonged to the Ghezzi family, who have made it one of the largest properties in the area. Brunello is the estate's flagship, the essence of its Sangiovese.
It is pure Sangiovese grown on clay-limestone soils rich in fossils. The grapes, picked between early and mid-October, macerate for 20-30 days in temperature-controlled steel, where malolactic also takes place; the wine then ages 24 months in Slavonian and French oak and a full year in bottle.
2021 saw late-April frosts that cut yields, followed by a warm but balanced summer with two timely August rains: full ripeness and great freshness. The result is a fragrant, precise, vertical Brunello: sour cherry, dark plum, violet, liquorice, undergrowth and tobacco; dense yet not heavy, with bright acidity, fine tannins and a long, mineral, spicy finish. 94 points Wine Spectator. With roasts, game, steak and aged pecorino.
