Poggio di Sotto is one of the most respected names in Montalcino. It sits at Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on the south-eastern side of the appellation, with vineyards looking out to Monte Amiata and the Orcia valley. Founder Piero Palmucci built a strictly traditional style here, now carried on by the Tipa family.
The Sangiovese ferments with native yeasts and ages for a long time in large Slavonian oak casks, never barriques. The Riserva is only made in the best years, and 2016 is one that Montalcino will remember: a balanced season, healthy grapes, freshness and structure in perfect harmony.
The wine is bright and deep: cherry, blood orange, dried flowers, forest floor and a very fine tannin. A collector's Brunello built for decades in the cellar. With red meat, game, truffle.
