Paternoster is one of the historic wineries of the Vulture, founded at Barile in the early decades of the 20th century and part of the Tommasi family group since 2016. Don Anselmo, dedicated to founder Anselmo Paternoster, is its flagship: since the mid-1980s it has helped establish Aglianico del Vulture among the great reds of the South. The label reads Riserva del Fondatore, and the 2005 is the edition celebrating the wine's twentieth anniversary.
The Aglianico grows on the slopes of Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano, on volcanic soils. The 2005 matured for about two and a half years between steel, large and small oak and bottle before release.
At twenty years old, this is an Aglianico in its full tertiary phase: garnet, with aromas of ripe and preserved red fruit, leather, tobacco, Mediterranean herbs, dark spice and balsamic notes, over tannins that have smoothed out. A bottle for lovers of mature southern reds. With game, lamb, braised meats and long-aged cheeses.
