Droppello Alto is the most ambitious white from Tenuta Fertuna, a large estate of about 150 hectares at Gavorrano in the Tuscan Maremma, now wholly owned by the Meregalli group. What sets it apart is the grape: not a white variety but Sangiovese vinified as a white, pressed straight away without skin contact.
The fruit comes from a single, organically farmed plot and is picked by hand. After gentle pressing the must ferments with native yeasts at low temperature; the wine then spends twelve months on its fine lees and a further six in new Allier oak tonneaux, with regular bâtonnage.
The 2021 is a deep straw yellow, with citrus, white flowers and a mineral note on the nose; the palate is broad and velvety, held up by Sangiovese's natural acidity. A structured, intriguing and food-friendly white: with cooked seafood starters, pasta in white sauces, poultry and seasonal vegetables.
