Flaccianello is Fontodi's pure Sangiovese, made by the Manetti family in Panzano in Chianti, and one of the wines that proved Sangiovese can stand alongside the great international reds. The name recalls Pagus Flaccianus, an ancient Roman settlement at the foot of the Pieve di San Leolino, whose cross is reproduced on the label.
The grapes come from the best vineyards of the Conca d'Oro, a south-facing natural amphitheatre on galestro soils, farmed organically. Native-yeast fermentation and about two years in French oak.
2012 came from a hot, dry summer: dark ripe fruit, spice, tobacco and the dense tannins typical of Panzano. With over ten years in bottle it has entered its best phase. Pair it with bistecca alla fiorentina, roasts and game.
