Flaccianello della Pieve is the pure Sangiovese of Fontodi, the Manetti family estate in the Conca d'Oro of Panzano, the most famous vineyard amphitheatre in Chianti Classico. Born in 1981, it is one of the historic Super Tuscans made from Sangiovese alone; the "della Pieve" in the name refers to the nearby parish church of San Leolino. Giovanni Manetti took the estate to certified organic farming, with its own cattle herd for manure.
The grapes come from a selection of the best vineyards in the Conca d'Oro, on south-facing galestro and clay. Spontaneous fermentation, then 24 months in French oak barriques and about ten months in bottle before release.
2019 is one of the finest vintages of the last decade in Chianti Classico, with steady ripening and wines of great balance. In the glass, morello cherry, violet, herbs, spice and an earthy note, with dense tannins and acidity that gives it great length. One of the peaks of Sangiovese, alongside Cepparello and Le Pergole Torte. For the cellar, or with steak and game.
