Avignonesi is one of the benchmark estates of Montepulciano: established in 1974, since 2009 it has been led by Virginie Saverys, who converted all the vineyards, between Montepulciano and Cortona, to organic and biodynamic farming. Alongside the Vino Nobile and the famous Vin Santo, Grifi is the house Super Tuscan, a red that combines the character of Sangiovese with the structure of Cabernet.
The 2020 Grifi is an equal blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, made from certified organic grapes: the Sangiovese comes from the Montepulciano vineyards, the Cabernet Sauvignon from those in Cortona and Montepulciano. The wine is aged in oak barriques and tonneaux before bottling.
A red of great structure, in which the dark fruit of the Cabernet meets the freshness and texture of the Sangiovese, with firm tannins and a long, spicy finish. It opens up well right away and, according to the producer, can evolve until 2033. Serve at 16-18 °C with red meat, roasts, game and aged cheeses. The magnum format slows its evolution and makes it ideal for large tables and special occasions.
