Il Nicchio 2021 (3-bottle wooden case) – Tenuta del Nicchio

Tenuta del Nicchio is the most personal project of Lodovico Antinori, founder of Ornellaia and Masseto, launched in 2018 with his daughter Sophia. It is deliberately small – about 12 hectares in Upper Maremma, across Bolgheri, Bibbona, Castagneto Carducci and Sassetta – and separate from Tenuta di Biserno. Il Nicchio is the flagship, devoted to Cabernet Franc, the variety Lodovico sees as the true calling of this coast.

The blend is 95% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot. Winemaking aims at balance between fruit and structure: the wine matures 12 months in barrique, with part of the blend aged in stainless steel, and is bottled unfiltered.

2021 has been hailed as a benchmark vintage: 99 points James Suckling, 96 Wine Advocate and 96 Vinous. Deep ruby with violet glints, it shows ripe cherry, plum, herbs, tobacco and balsamic notes; the palate is powerful and complex, with blackberry, blackcurrant, mocha and espresso, velvety tannins, freshness and length. Superb with grilled meats, game and aged cheeses, with ageing potential of more than twenty years. Offered in the original three-bottle wooden case, ideal for the cellar or as a gift.
