Montiano is the wine that made the Cotarella family famous and one of the reds that changed the image of Lazio. First made with the 1993 vintage, it was a bold bet: planting Merlot, with vines sourced from Montpellier, in the Montefiascone area, a territory traditionally devoted to white wines.
The vineyards lie between Montefiascone and Castiglione in Teverina, at around 300 metres, on stony volcanic soils that give the Merlot freshness and a distinctive savoury edge. After vinification the wine matures in French oak barriques and then in bottle before release.
2017, a hot, dry vintage, produced a concentrated, supple Montiano: plum, blackberry, ripe cherry, cocoa, vanilla and sweet spice, with velvety tannins and a long finish. It is one of the benchmark Merlots of central Italy. With beef fillet, lamb, game and aged cheeses.
