Pinot Nero Vigna Roccolo 2017 – Hofstätter

J. Hofstätter is one of the historic wineries of Tramin and a benchmark name for Pinot Noir in Alto Adige. The heart of its red production is the Barthenau estate at Mazon, the plateau above Neumarkt regarded as one of Italy's finest sites for this grape. This bottle comes in a wooden case.

Vigna Roccolo is one of the single-vineyard selections in the Barthenau range: an old pergola-trained planting dating from 1942, among the oldest Pinot Noir vineyards in Alto Adige, at around 400 metres on sedimentary soils rich in clay and minerals. The age of the vines and naturally low yields give grapes of great aromatic concentration.

The 2017 is deep ruby, with morello cherry, lingonberry, spice and a touch of oak; the palate combines density and elegance, with precise acidity and velvety tannins. It is one of Italy's most ambitious Pinot Noirs, worth setting beside good Burgundy. With red meat, game, duck or not-too-aged cheeses.
