Le Casematte is the estate of Gianfranco Sabbatino and former footballer Andrea Barzagli, in the hills of Faro above Messina, overlooking the Strait. The name comes from the casematte, the Second World War military fortifications that still stand above the winery. Winemaking consultancy is by Carlo Ferrini.
The certified organic vineyards lie within the Faro DOC, the smallest appellation in Sicily. Rosematte is the house rosé, pure Nerello Mascalese, the same grape behind the reds of Faro and Etna, vinified to bring out freshness and fruit.
In the glass it is bright pink, with aromas of wild strawberry, pomegranate, citrus and flowers; the palate is savoury, crisp and flowing, with a fruity finish. A Mediterranean rosé for aperitifs and summer meals: raw fish, cured meats, pizza, seafood and light dishes.
