Serpico is the flagship Aglianico of Feudi di San Gregorio, the Sorbo Serpico winery that since the 1990s has played a decisive role in putting Irpinia back on the map of great Italian wine. The name is that of the village where the winery stands, in the heart of the province of Avellino.
It comes from the historic Dal Re vineyard, where ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines have been documented and propagated, a living record of Irpinia's ancient viticulture. After fermentation in stainless steel, the wine ages for about 18 months in French oak barriques and large casks, then spends a year in bottle.
Ten years on from the harvest, the 2015 is an Aglianico in full evolution: preserved red fruit, spice, cocoa and coffee, with the grape's powerful tannins now more relaxed. A structured Southern red to pair with braised meats, game and aged cheeses.
