Elio Sandri is one of the most reserved and rigorous growers in the Langhe. His Cascina Disa lies at Perno, a hamlet of Monforte d'Alba, bought by his father Giovanni in 1965; Elio has made the wine since 1981 and produces very few bottles, much sought after by lovers of classic Barolo.
The Disa vineyard surrounds the farmhouse, facing south and east. Intervention in the vineyard is kept to a minimum; in the cellar fermentations start spontaneously in concrete vats and the wine ages at length in large Slavonian oak casks, without fining or filtration. The Riserva spends several years in wood before bottling.
2017, a hot, dry vintage, produced a Barolo of real structure, kept in check here by the traditional style: cherry, dried rose, liquorice, spice and forest floor, with the firm tannins of Monforte. A handcrafted Barolo for the cellar, for braised meats, truffles and aged cheeses.
