Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2021 – Penfolds

Penfolds is Australia's most famous winery, the home of Grange. Bin 28 is one of its historic wines: it debuted with the 1959 vintage as the first label of the "Bin" range, and takes its name from the Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley, acquired by Penfolds in 1945, which was originally its sole source.

Today it is a blend of Shiraz from several South Australian regions: in 2021 McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, Padthaway and Clare Valley, with the Barossa always well represented. It matures for 12 months in American oak hogsheads, with very little new oak, to let the fruit shine.

2021 was an excellent vintage, with a cooler than average summer and slow, even ripening. In the glass, blackberry, plum, black pepper, sweet spice and a touch of chocolate, with generous structure and soft tannins. A classic Australian Shiraz for grilled rib-eye, stews, barbecue and aged cheeses.
