CastelGiocondo is the Marchesi Frescobaldi estate in Montalcino, owned by the Florentine family since 1989. It lies on the south-western side of the appellation, at about 300 metres, around a castle built around 1100 to guard the road from the coast to Siena. Of a property of more than 800 hectares, about 150 are devoted to Brunello: this is the estate's classic Brunello and its reference wine.
The Sangiovese grows on highly varied soils of marl, clay and Pliocene sands. The selected grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel with frequent pump-overs; in warm 2020 macerations were kept under 28 days so as not to make the wine heavy. Ageing lasts four years between wood and bottle: one year in used barriques, then two years in large Slavonian oak casks.
The result is a deep ruby Brunello, with blueberry, blackberry, blackcurrant and crunchy cherry, floral and spicy hints, then chocolate, herbs and leather. The tannins are dense, joined by a mineral note and well-balanced freshness; the finish is long. Already enjoyable, it will improve for at least a decade. With roasts, game, braised dishes and aged cheeses.
