Le Ragnaie belongs to Riccardo Campinoti, who took it over in 2002 and within a few years made it one of the most admired names in traditional Brunello. The winery stands at Passo del Lume Spento, the highest point in the appellation; the name recalls the bird-catching nets once used on these hills.
Fornace is the vineyard at Castelnuovo dell'Abate, in the south-east of Montalcino, warmer and sunnier than the estate's high-altitude plots. Only copper, sulphur and manure in the vineyard; in the cellar, spontaneous fermentations in concrete with long macerations and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks.
2007 was a warm, generous vintage in Montalcino, giving rich, ripe Brunello. Almost twenty years on, the wine is in its tertiary phase: cherries in spirit, leather, tobacco, forest floor and spice, with polished tannins. A rare bottle that tells the story of the early vintages of a producer now considered a cult name. With wild boar, pigeon or aged pecorino.
