Caccialupo is the Buttafuoco dell'Oltrepò Pavese of Tenuta Fornace, an estate at Rovescala, south of Pavia, owned by the Rossi family since the early nineteenth century. Buttafuoco is one of the most typical reds of the Oltrepò: a traditional blend of local grapes, historically a sturdy wine with plenty of character.
The grapes are Croatina, Barbera, Uva Rara and Ughetta (Vespolina), from vineyards at around 270 metres on clay and silt soils, farmed organically and biodynamically. The wine spends a few months in steel and then matures in large oak casks, which round out the tannins without masking the fruit.
In the glass it shows macerated red fruit, small berries, morello cherry and violet; the tannins are silky and supported by lively freshness. An honest, versatile red with a strong sense of place, for Oltrepò salumi, pasta with ragù, grilled meats and medium-aged cheeses.
