Raina is a small Montefalco estate founded in the early 2000s by Francesco Mariani, who left philosophy studies and a kitchen career to devote himself to wine, together with agronomist Andrea Mattioli. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, with only copper, sulphur and herbal teas.
Campo di Raina is their pure Sagrantino, from vineyards at around 300 metres on calcareous, gravelly soils. It ferments in steel with about two weeks of skin contact, then has a very long ageing: two years in large casks, one in steel and one in bottle. A take on Sagrantino far from barriques, taming its tannins with time.
The 2019 is powerful but not heavy: blackberry, plum, spice, herbs and earthy notes, with the grape's typical tannins now finer. An honest, artisanal Sagrantino to enjoy with wild boar, pigeon, roast shank and aged cheeses.
At a glance: Sagrantino 100% · 15% ABV · 0.75 l · Raina, Montefalco (PG)
