Chateau Musar is the wine that put Lebanon on the world wine map. Founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, the winery is at Ghazir, north of Beirut, while the vineyards are in the Bekaa Valley at around a thousand metres. His son Serge, in charge from 1959, made it legendary, carrying on production even through the civil war.
The Rouge is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, vinified separately, aged for about a year in French barriques and then blended. The style is deliberately natural and hands-off, and the house releases the wine only after long bottle ageing, usually around seven years after the harvest.
Cherry, plum, oriental spice, tobacco and an earthy streak, with lively acidity and soft tannins. A unique red, different every year and able to age for decades. With lamb, spiced meat dishes and Middle Eastern cuisine.
