Carpineto was founded in 1967 in Dudda, a hamlet of Greve in Chianti, by Giovanni Carlo Sacchet and Antonio Mario Zaccheo, who set out to make Chianti of the highest quality. Today the two families run five estates in Tuscany, with Caterina Sacchet as winemaker. Castaldo is the house's Chianti DOCG Riserva: a classic Tuscan red made for the table.
The grapes come from vineyards in central Tuscany, in the area between Castellina in Chianti and San Casciano in Val di Pesa: mostly Sangiovese, with Canaiolo and other traditional red varieties. After fermentation the wine matures for 8-10 months in oak casks of different sizes, then finishes its ageing in concrete tanks and in bottle.
The winery rates 2020 a five-star vintage, with excellent varietal expression, elegance and balance. The colour is bright ruby with garnet glints; the nose shows red fruit, iris and violet, then well-integrated vanilla from the oak. The palate is soft, medium-bodied and long. Serve at 18-20 °C with ragù, braised dishes, roast red meat, bistecca alla fiorentina, game and aged cheeses.
