The Tornatore family has farmed vines at Castiglione di Sicilia, on the northern slope of Etna, for generations, but it is in recent years that the winery has become one of the volcano's leading names, with a large vineyard holding spread over several contrade. The Riserva is the most ambitious red in the range.
It is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, fermented in wooden vats with about two weeks of maceration. Ageing is long: three years in large 25-hectolitre French oak casks, six months in concrete and another six in bottle before release.
2017, a hot vintage, gave a generous red that still carries the volcanic savouriness: ripe cherry, Mediterranean herbs, spice and mineral notes, with fine, well-integrated tannins. With pasta in meat sauce, grilled meats, lamb and medium-aged cheeses.
