La Felce is Andrea Marcesini's small estate in the Colli di Luni, at the far eastern end of Liguria, right by the Tuscan border. The name refers to the fern (felce), which thrives on the area's acidic soils. Andrea, a former carpenter, took over his grandfather's vines in the late 1990s and now works with his son Francesco, organically and with a thoroughly artisanal approach.
Felcebianco is a traditional blend of Vermentino, Malvasia and Trebbiano from vines around forty years old on sandy soils. The grapes get a short maceration on the skins, a couple of days, which gives the wine more substance and aroma than a conventional white.
In the glass it is fresh and savoury, with yellow fruit, herbs and a hint of Mediterranean scrub, and a nicely flowing palate. An honest, place-driven white, perfect for every day: with seafood starters, raw fish, vegetable pies, risotto and baked fish.
