Gattinara 2020 – Travaglini

Travaglini is the best-known name in Gattinara, in northern Piedmont. The family has grown vines here since the nineteenth century; the winery in its current form dates from 1958, when Giancarlo Travaglini also designed and patented the famous curved bottle: it sits well in the hand and, when pouring, its curve holds back the sediment.

The Nebbiolo grows on the hills at the foot of Monte Rosa, on rocky, acidic soils of volcanic origin, rich in porphyry, granite and iron. Gattinara matures in Slavonian oak casks and then in bottle, following local tradition.

The 2020 is a fresh, fine Gattinara: cherry, raspberry, rose, spice and a clear mineral streak, with elegant tannins and lively acidity. A northern Nebbiolo different from Barolo, more vertical and austere, and excellent value. With risotto, braised beef, bollito misto and aged cheeses.
