Castello di Monsanto's Il Poggio 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG is a pure Sangiovese of rare elegance, the denomination's first official cru and a symbol of Chianti tradition.
Produced from the historic Il Poggio vineyard, located at 310 meters above sea level on marly soils in the municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, this wine was the first Chianti Classico to bear a single vineyard designation on the label (since 1962). The 2018 vintage was balanced, with favorable weather conditions that allowed for slow and complete ripening of the grapes. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled, truncated cone-shaped stainless steel vats, with maceration lasting approximately 20–22 days and a délestage process. Aged in 38 hl oak barrels for approximately 20 months, followed by bottle aging.
The wine displays a ruby red color tending towards garnet. On the nose, it is intensely aromatic and complex, with notes of black cherry, apricot, sweet spices, leather, and tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied, deep, and structured, with elegant tannins and vibrant acidity, guaranteeing extraordinary aging potential (up to 2040+). The alcohol content is 14.5% vol.
Il Poggio 2018 received excellent scores from international critics: 96 Wine Spectator, 96 James Suckling, 94 Decanter, 94 Vinous, 98 Luca Gardini, 94 Wine Advocate, 94 Doctor Wine, confirming its status as one of the most iconic and enduring Chianti Classico Gran Seleziones.
