Le Pergole Torte is one of the wines that rewrote the history of Sangiovese. Sergio Manetti first made it in 1977 at Montevertine, in Radda in Chianti: it was the area's first pure Sangiovese, and for that very reason, under the rules of the time, it could not be called Chianti Classico. Today the estate is run by his son Martino. Alberto Manfredi's artist labels with their female faces have become iconic.
The grapes come from the estate's historic vineyards. Fermentation takes place in concrete, then the wine matures for twelve months in barriques and another twelve in Slavonian oak casks, with a short spell in bottle.
2016 is one of the great recent Tuscan vintages. The wine combines depth and finesse: cherry, violet, blood orange, herbs and spice, with vibrant acidity and very precise tannins. Already elegant, it still has many years ahead. Among Italy's most sought-after Sangiovese, alongside the great Brunellos. With roasts, game and aged cheeses.
