Tenuta del Nicchio is a small estate run by Lodovico Antinori and his daughter Sophia, with vineyards between Bolgheri and Bibbona on the Tuscan coast. Antinori, a historic name in Italian wine and brother of Piero Antinori, gave the cuvée his own name: Lodovico is the estate's flagship wine, with Michel Rolland and Julien Viaud as winemakers.
It is a red based largely on Cabernet Franc (about 90%), completed by Petit Verdot, from the roughly six-hectare Bellaria parcel. It ferments mostly in wood and matures for about sixteen months in new and second-passage barriques; it is bottled unfiltered. Production is very limited, around ten thousand bottles.
The 2021 is dark and deep, with ripe red and black fruit, spice, herbal and toasted notes; the palate is full and intense, with dense yet sweet tannins and a long, fruity and balsamic finish. It earned 97 points from Wine Advocate and 98 from James Suckling and Decanter. Serve at 18-20 °C with rich red meat, game and aged cheeses. This is the original three-bottle wooden case, ideal for a collection or as a gift.
