Before becoming the name of one of Lombardy's best-known reds, Maurizio Zanella was the man who turned Ca' del Bosco, at Erbusco, into one of the flagship houses of Franciacorta. The red that bears his signature was first made in 1981 and is remembered as the first Italian wine to carry its maker's signature on the label.
It is a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from estate vineyards in Franciacorta, now certified organic. As with the house's Franciacortas, the bunches are washed and dried before vinification; the wine ferments and ages in small oak casks and rests for a long time in bottle before release.
2010, a cool vintage, produced a classically styled wine which, after more than ten years in bottle, shows complete development: ripe black fruit, cassis, tobacco, leather, graphite and spice, with fine, fully melded tannins. One of the Northern Italian Bordeaux blends that made history; with roasts, game or aged cheeses.
