Fattoria Colleallodole is the Antano family estate on the hills of Bevagna, a stone's throw from Montefalco. Milziade Antano, a former sharecropper, bought the land in 1969 and began bottling in the 1970s; today his son Francesco runs it. The name recalls the larks that cross these hills in autumn.
Around 12 hectares of vineyard are tended with almost artisanal care, with a measured use of technology in the cellar. Sagrantino, Italy's most tannic grape, is vinified traditionally with long macerations and then aged at length in wood to tame its power.
The 2016 is a deep, austere Sagrantino: ripe plum, blackberry, black pepper, leather, tobacco and balsamic notes, with dense, vibrant tannins. A wine of great character that can easily handle more years in the cellar. With braised meats, game, lamb and blue or aged cheeses.
At a glance: Sagrantino 100% · 15% ABV · 0.75 l · Fattoria Colleallodole, Bevagna (PG)
