Castello di Nipozzano is the historic Marchesi Frescobaldi estate a few kilometres north-east of Florence, in the heart of Chianti Rùfina. Nipozzano Riserva is its emblematic wine, for generations one of Tuscany's best-known reds.
It is made from Sangiovese with small shares of complementary varieties: Malvasia Nera, Colorino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentation is spontaneous in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by extended maceration and malolactic in steel; the wine then matures in barriques and completes its ageing in bottle before release.
2023 combined a very mild winter and rains that replenished soil water reserves with a scorching July, tempered by a drop in temperatures at the end of the month that allowed balanced ripening. The wine is a bright ruby, with floral notes and delicate fruit, then nutmeg, clove, coffee and toast; the palate shows elegant fruit density, dense yet balanced tannins and a fresh, mineral close. With roasts, grilled red meat and aged cheeses.
