Coppo is one of the historic houses of Canelli, founded in 1892 and now run by the fourth generation of the family. Its cellars, dug into the tuff beneath the hill, are part of Canelli's so-called "underground cathedrals", recognised by UNESCO together with the vineyard landscapes of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato. Pomorosso has been the house's flagship Barbera for decades, now under the Nizza appellation.
The grapes come from vineyards at about 200 metres in the southern part of the Asti area, on calcareous marl and clay with small amounts of gypsum and iron. Picked into small crates, they ferment in steel with a moderate maceration and gentle pump-overs; the wine then ages for about 14 months in barriques.
2022, a hot and dry vintage, produced a rich, concentrated Barbera: ripe black fruit, sweet spice, toasty notes and freshness that supports the structure. Drink now or cellar for a few years, with braised meats, game, roast red meats and aged cheeses.
