Poliziano is the winery that did more than any other to modernise Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Founded by the Carletti family and taken to the top by Federico Carletti, it is named after Angelo Ambrogini, known as Poliziano, the humanist poet born in Montepulciano. Asinone is its most famous cru, made only in the best vintages.
The Asinone vineyard, at 350 to 400 metres on stony silty clay facing south-south-west, has its oldest plots planted in 1963. The Sangiovese ferments in steel and ages 16 to 18 months in French oak tonneaux.
2017, a hot and dry vintage, produced a concentrated yet balanced Asinone: dark cherry, plum, sweet spice, tobacco and an earthy touch, with dense, silky tannins. One of the benchmark Nobiles, worth setting beside the best Brunello and Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. With Florentine steak, wild boar and aged pecorino.
