Petrus is the emblem of Pomerol, an appellation with no official classification. The estate, owned by the Moueix family, covers just 11.5 hectares, and about 90% of its vines sit on the buttonhole of clay, a lens of compact blue clay that is rare even in Pomerol. Olivier Berrouet leads the technical team.
The wine is 100% Merlot. After a short pre-fermentation maceration of one or two days, it ferments in concrete vats with very gentle extraction: in 2023 pump-overs were kept to a minimum so as not to force the tannins. Malolactic fermentation takes place in vat, and the wine is aged in barriques, half new and half one year old.
2023, harvested between 11 and 20 September, produced a Pétrus that is more elegant than powerful: violet and iris, raspberry, blackberry and cassis, with fine, velvety tannins and a long, silky finish. It is a wine made for waiting: critics suggest a drinking window starting around 2030 and running beyond 2050. Offered in a wooden case, a collector's format.
