ColleMassari is the estate of Claudio Tipa and Maria Iris Bertarelli at Cinigiano, in Montecucco, the Maremma appellation that climbs towards the slopes of Monte Amiata; the same family owns Grattamacco in Bolgheri and Poggio di Sotto in Montalcino. Poggio Lombrone is the Sangiovese Riserva at the top of the estate's range.
It is pure Sangiovese from mature vines at around 300 metres, on clay-limestone soils with tuff, farmed organically. It ferments in open conical vats and ages at length in large oak casks, followed by time in bottle.
2012, a hot, dry vintage, produced a generous Sangiovese; today it is a wine in full evolution, with ripe cherry, plum, tobacco, leather and forest-floor notes over now-polished tannins. A great chance to discover how well Montecucco can age. With roasts, wild boar stew, pici with ragù and aged cheeses.
