A piece of Valpolicella history. In 1989 Amarone was still officially called "Recioto della Valpolicella Amarone": the dry wine made from dried grapes, cousin of the sweet Recioto. Bertani is one of the houses that made it famous worldwide, with a style that has stayed true to tradition.
Its Amarone Classico undergoes a long drying period and then ages for years in large oak casks, only being released when it is ready. This approach favours elegance and longevity over sheer power, and is best appreciated in bottles like this one, more than thirty years old.
In the glass: dried fruit, plum, spirit-soaked cherry, cocoa, tobacco, spice and leather, with a palate that is still lively and harmonious. Open it slowly, perhaps decanting, for an occasion worthy of such a bottle.
