Saffredi 2000 – Fattoria Le Pupille

Saffredi is the wine that put the Maremma among Tuscany's great reds. It is made by Fattoria Le Pupille, Elisabetta Geppetti's estate in the Scansano area, and was created in the late 1980s with the advice of Giacomo Tachis. The name pays tribute to Fredi Geppetti, of the owning family.

It is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, completed in the early vintages by a share of Alicante, the historic grape of the Maremma coast; Petit Verdot only came in later. It ages in French oak barriques.

2000, a warm vintage, produced an opulent, rich wine. More than twenty-five years on it is a mature red, its dark fruit now evolved towards tobacco, leather, liquorice, earth and spice, with tannins softened by time. A piece of coastal Super Tuscan history, to be opened calmly and served with game, braised meats or long-aged cheeses.
