Stefano Amerighi is the grower whose name is most closely tied to Cortona Syrah. His estate at Poggiobello di Farneta, between Cortona and Montepulciano, is farmed biodynamically with a holistic approach: preparations, lunar phases, Chianina cattle grazing between the rows. Serine is the historic name for Syrah in Côte-Rôtie, and that is no coincidence.
The wine comes from a vineyard planted with a rare massal selection of Syrah, which reached full production in 2018. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, and ageing takes place in ceramic vessels, which allow slow micro-oxygenation without adding any oak flavour.
The 2020 is a Syrah of great finesse, far from any notion of power: blood orange, small red and black fruits, pepper, rhubarb and garrigue herbs, with a fresh, savoury, long palate. One of Italy's most original Syrahs, to try with pigeon, duck or Cinta Senese charcuterie.
