Nino Negri is the historic winery of Chiuro, founded at the end of the 19th century and today a benchmark for Valtellina, where Nebbiolo, known here as Chiavennasca, grows on steep terraces held up by dry-stone walls. Sfursat Carlo Negri, named after a member of the founding family, is one of the house's most classic interpretations of Sforzato.
Sforzato is made from grapes left to dry for around three months after harvest, helped by the cool, dry Alpine air, until they have lost much of their weight. The concentrated wine then ages in wood for at least a year, and in bottle before release.
Ten years on, the 2015 is a mature, warm red in which the richness of the dried grapes blends with tertiary notes: fruit in spirit and dried fruit, blueberry, spice, liquorice and cocoa, with Nebbiolo's tannins now enveloping. Pair it with braised meats, game, pizzoccheri and aged cheeses such as Bitto.
