Arianna Occhipinti is one of the leading winegrowers of modern Sicily: she started very young at Vittoria, in the province of Ragusa, and her wines have given Nero d'Avola and Frappato a new image. The name Siccagno recalls the Sicilian word for dry farming, without irrigation.
The grapes come from vines around forty years old in the Fossa di Lupo district, on sandy, limestone soils, farmed organically. Spontaneous fermentation in concrete with native yeasts is followed by long ageing in large Slavonian oak casks and a rest in bottle; no fining or filtration.
This is a Nero d'Avola far from the stereotype of power: crunchy red fruit, Mediterranean herbs, spice and an earthy touch, with fine tannins and good freshness. The 2020 is juicy and already harmonious. With pasta and ragù, grilled meats, Sicilian involtini or medium-aged cheeses.
