The Vittorio Moretti Riserva is the pinnacle of Bellavista, the Erbusco house founded by Vittorio Moretti and long one of the benchmark names of Franciacorta. It was first made in 1984, when winemaker Mattia Vezzola joined the estate, and is released only in vintages judged worthy of it.
The 2013 is a blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir from a selection of the house's best vineyards. The base wines ferment partly in steel and partly in barriques; after bottling the Riserva spends at least six years on its lees. Dosage is minimal, in Extra Brut style.
The result is a Franciacorta of great depth: very fine bubbles, aromas of yellow fruit, candied citrus, bread crust, toasted hazelnut and a mineral streak. The palate is taut, creamy and very long. One of the great Italian sparkling wines, worth setting beside top vintage Champagne; perfect with shellfish, fine fish or rich risottos.
