Grifi is a historic red from Avignonesi, the Montepulciano estate now run by Virginie Saverys and farmed organically and biodynamically. First made in the 1980s, it has been brought back in recent years. The name comes from the griffin, the mythical half-lion, half-eagle creature on the coats of arms of both Montepulciano and Cortona: a symbol of the meeting of two very different grapes.
Sangiovese and an international variety come from vineyards between Montepulciano and Cortona, vinified separately in stainless steel with native yeasts; the wine then ages about 18 months in wood, mostly French barriques, with some large cask for the Sangiovese.
2019, a beautifully balanced vintage in Tuscany, gives a well-structured red: red and black fruit, herbs, spice and elegant tannins, with Sangiovese's freshness keeping pace. With bistecca, roasts, pappardelle with wild boar or aged pecorino.
