The Mazzei family has been growing vines at Fonterutoli, in Chianti Classico, for more than six hundred years. Philip is named after Filippo Mazzei (1730-1816), a family ancestor who emigrated to Virginia, became a friend of Thomas Jefferson and wrote words on the equality of men that, according to John F. Kennedy, Jefferson echoed in the Declaration of Independence.
It is a pure Cabernet Sauvignon from the family's vineyards at Fonterutoli, on limestone, and at Belguardo in the Maremma, on sandstone. It matures for about 18 months in French and American oak barriques, some of them new.
The 2020 is rich and smooth with a fresh finish: blackcurrant, blackberry, cocoa, cedar and dried flowers, with ripe tannins. A well-made Tuscan Cabernet that offers a lot for the price and is already a pleasure to drink. With grilled meats, rib steak, roast shank and medium-aged cheeses.
At a glance: Cabernet Sauvignon 100% · 14% ABV · 0.75 l · Mazzei, Tuscany
