Il Blu is the signature wine of Brancaia, the Chianti Classico estate bought in the 1980s by the Swiss Widmer family and now run by Barbara Widmer. The name refers to the colour of its label, which has become one of the most recognisable among Tuscan reds.
The grapes come from vineyards in Castellina and Radda in Chianti, between 230 and 400 metres, on loamy soils at Castellina and stonier ground at Radda. In 2013 the blend is clearly Merlot-led, with Sangiovese and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. It ages for 20 months in barriques, two thirds new, and at least a year in bottle.
More than ten years on, the 2013, a cool and classic vintage, shows lovely development: ripe black fruit, blueberry, coffee bean, sweet spice and tobacco, with fine, now well-integrated tannins. An internationally styled yet elegant Tuscan red, to pair with game, braised meats or aged cheeses.
