Ornellaia is, with Sassicaia, the name that brought Bolgheri onto the international stage. Founded by Lodovico Antinori in the early 1980s, with 1985 as its first vintage, the estate now belongs to the Frescobaldi family. Through the Vendemmia d'Artista project each vintage receives a name and an artist's interpretation: 2019 is Il Vigore (Vigour), entrusted to Swedish artists Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg. The name evokes the strength of the vines' healthy growth and the energy of the wine.
A Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, from the estate's various vineyards vinified separately. The wine ages for about eighteen months in barriques, 70% new, and a year in bottle before release.
The 2019 season was irregular in spring but excellent in summer, with a cool September that brought finesse and aromatic richness. In the glass spiced and balsamic notes, black pepper, sage, dark fruit and dense, elegant tannins, with a long, fresh finish. A great Bolgheri for the cellar. With lamb, fillet steak or game.
