Le Mortelle is the Antinori family's Maremma estate near Castiglione della Pescaia, a few kilometres from the sea. Poggio alle Nane is its flagship red and takes its name from the hill where ducks, locally called nane, were once raised, sloping down to a small lake.
It is a Cabernet Franc-based blend, with Cabernet Sauvignon and a small share of Carmenère, a very rare grape in Tuscany. The vines grow on sandy, medium-textured siliceous-clay soils, rich in stones. After hand-picking and sorting on a table, the wine ferments in stainless steel with about twenty days of maceration and ages for 16 months in French oak barriques.
The 2020 shows ripe black fruit, herbs, graphite and spice, with dense yet elegant tannins and a long finish. A Bordeaux-style red that captures the coastal Maremma well. With braised meats, game, red meat roasts and aged cheeses.
