Baffonero 2017 – Rocca di Frassinello

Baffonero is the pure Merlot of Rocca di Frassinello, the Maremma estate founded by Paolo Panerai (Castellare di Castellina) together with Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite, with a winery designed by Renzo Piano. The name recalls the nickname of a local farmer who once owned the vineyard.

The vineyard lies at Gavorrano, on well-ventilated clay a few kilometres from the sea, and yields very few bottles. After vinification the wine ages for about two years in new French oak barriques.

2017, a hot and dry vintage, produced a concentrated, deep wine: black fruit, cocoa, sweet spice and soft tannins. It is one of the Italian Merlots that can face the legends of the Tuscan coast, such as Masseto and Redigaffi, without fear. With game, steak au poivre or aged cheeses.
