Rocca di Frassinello is the Maremma estate founded by Paolo Panerai (Castellare di Castellina) together with Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite, with a winery designed by Renzo Piano and opened in 2007. On the estate's land archaeologists excavated the Etruscan necropolis of San Germano, where jars with traces of wine were found: this wine bears the same name.
It is a blend that combines the estate's Bordeaux soul, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in equal parts, with a share of Sangiovese, from vineyards in the hills of Gavorrano, a few kilometres from the sea.
2014 was a cool, rainy vintage in Tuscany that rewarded careful selection: the result is a leaner, more elegant red than usual, now showing ripe dark fruit, spice, tobacco and balsamic notes, with softened tannins. With roasts, feathered game and medium-aged cheeses.
