Sassius is the most ambitious Aglianico Riserva from Di Majo Norante, the Campomarino winery that more than any other has brought Molise wine to a wider audience. It comes from the Camarda estate in the Ramitello area, a few kilometres from the Adriatic Sea.
Part of the grapes are harvested late, as late as the end of November, for greater concentration. Vinification involves long skin contact, then the wine ages for about 24 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux and rests at length in bottle before release.
2017, a hot and dry vintage, produced a full, dark Aglianico: ripe black fruit, plum, sweet spice, cocoa and liquorice, with the grape's firm tannins well integrated by the oak. A Southern red of real character, to pair with braised meats, lamb, game and aged cheeses.
